Attorney Profile: Vaughan C. Jones

Vaughan C. Jones is a former prosecutor and effectively represented hundreds clients charged with crimes in Virginia.
His success is the result of hard-work, dedication, courtroom advocacy
skills and experience. Mr. Jones graduated from James Madison University
in 1992. After college, he attended a summer program at the University
of Richmond's Law School where he was named the program's Most
Outstanding Student. Understanding the value of studying law in the nation's
capital, Jones was accepted to and graduated from the American University,
Washington College of Law, in Washington D.C.
His Legal Experience
After law school, Jones accepted an offer to serve in one of the seven
legal clerkships at the Virginia Supreme Court, the highest appellate
court in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Jones used his exclusive position
with the Virginia Supreme Court Jones to acquire a position as an Assistant
Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Virginia. As an Assistant Attorney
General, Jones represented the Governor of Virginia, the Virginia Parole
Board, and was special counsel to the Virginia Department of Corrections.
In 1999, Jones joined the Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.
As a prosecutor, Jones tried almost every type of criminal matter and
participated in several of the City's highest profile cases, including
a successive capital murder conviction in 2002. Jones never lost a jury
trial as lead prosecutor.
In 2003, Jones left the Commonwealth's Attorney Office to form the
firm Johnson Jones. As a founding partner in that law firm, Jones and
his firm represented some of Richmond's most notorious criminal defendants,
including homicide, capital murder, and federal offenses. The firm quickly
grew in size and hired several of Richmond's most notable and talented
criminal defense attorneys. Prior to its dissolution, Johnson Jones became
one of the larger solely criminal defense law firms in the Richmond area.
Former associates from that firm have gone on to achieve tremendous careers
in Central Virginia.
The Start of the Firm
In 2009, Jones established the law office of Vaughan C. Jones, Attorney
at Law. Beginning that year, Jones grew his legal practice and reputation
state-wide. Within a short time, he had won legal victories in Southwestern
Virginia, Northern Virginia and Tidewater. Jones tried federal felony
jury trials in Charlottesville, Norfolk and Richmond. Relying on his law
school experience in Washington, D.C., Jones appeared in Alexandria's
federal court and won successive legal victories in Northern Virginia.
Never afraid to take a case to trial, he has tried approximately seventy
felony criminal jury trials in eleven different jurisdictions. He has
represented clients in twenty-four different state judicial circuits,
Federal District Court, and had a legal opinions on his cases published
in the Virginia Supreme Court and the United States Fourth Circuit Court
of Appeals.
By appearing in a wide variety of jurisdictions, Jones has developed professional
relationships with a large number of judges and prosecutors. He is able
to tailor legal specific defense strategies appropriate for any client,
